Sunnyenergy was awarded a D-Prize in 2024 to pilot an innovative last-mile distribution model that expands access to affordable, clean, and sustainable solar energy in rural Malawi. The project focused on reaching underserved communities by combining community-based sales agents, solar kiosks, and flexible financing to make modern energy accessible to low-income households.

The initiative leveraged a Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) financing model integrated with mobile money, enabling customers to purchase quality solar products through affordable installment payments. By employing local sales agents and kiosk operators, Sunnyenergy strengthened community trust, improved customer support, and created local employment opportunities while ensuring reliable after-sales service and warranty support.

The success of the D-Prize project validated Sunnyenergy's distribution model and established a strong foundation for scaling clean energy access across Malawi. Today, the company continues to build on this experience to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions that improve livelihoods, support economic development, and advance universal access to clean energy.

As part of its commitment to advancing Quality Education (SDG 4) and Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Sunnyenergy donated and installed a Solar Home System at M'bang'ombe Primary School in Lilongwe. The project restored reliable electricity to a Standard 8 classroom, enabling students to attend evening classes in a safe, well-lit learning environment.

Before the installation, the school's existing solar system was no longer functional, limiting learning opportunities after dark. The new system now provides dependable lighting and phone charging, supporting both students and school staff while improving the overall learning environment.

The initiative reflects Sunnyenergy's commitment to expanding access to clean energy for underserved communities and demonstrates how renewable energy can improve education, strengthen community development, and create lasting social impact. By working closely with the school management and local community, Sunnyenergy has helped create a sustainable energy solution that will continue to benefit learners for years to come.

Sunnyenergy was a participating implementation partner in the Demand-Side Subsidy (DSS) Results-Based Financing (RBF) Programme, an initiative under the Energising Development (EnDev) Malawi Project implemented by GIZ Malawi in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Self Help Africa (SHA), and CUMO Microfinance.

Through this programme, Sunnyenergy expanded access to quality off-grid solar products and clean cooking solutions for underserved households by combining last-mile distribution with targeted subsidy support. The initiative helped reduce affordability barriers, enabling more families to adopt modern, reliable, and sustainable energy technologies.

Working alongside government, development partners, financial institutions, and private sector stakeholders, Sunnyenergy strengthened community-based energy distribution systems, supported local economic development, and contributed to Malawi's national goals of increasing access to clean energy and clean cooking solutions.

Sunnyenergy is expanding access to clean energy through a growing network of community-based sales agents who serve households in remote and underserved communities across Malawi. As a proud member of the Global Distributors Collective (GDC), we are strengthening last-mile distribution by connecting rural families with affordable, high-quality solar energy solutions.

The project is ongoing and combines community engagement with flexible Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) financing, enabling households to purchase Solar Home Systems through affordable installment payments. Our dedicated team provides customer onboarding, account management, technical support, and after-sales service, ensuring customers receive reliable products and long-term support.

By building trusted local distribution networks and innovative financing solutions, Sunnyenergy is making clean, reliable, and sustainable energy accessible to more households while creating employment opportunities and supporting inclusive economic development across Malawi.
